The watermark line: where free ends
| Tier type | Watermark? | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Free consumer tiers | Usually yes | Runway Free, most trial apps |
| Paid subscriptions | Visible removal is the product | Runway Standard+, Kling paid plans |
| Official APIs | Clean output | Sora 2, Veo via Vertex, Runway API |
| Unofficial resellers | Varies — verify | Discount Sora/Veo access |

The two kinds of watermark
Visible watermarks are the paywall: free tiers brand your output so publishing requires upgrading — which is why "free AI video generator" almost never means "publishable video," and why the watermark-free tier is a product's real entry price. Invisible provenance marks (e.g. SynthID-style watermarking in Google's outputs, C2PA metadata) are different: they ride along on paid output too, exist for authenticity tracing, and don't affect how your video looks — but they do mean platforms can increasingly detect and auto-label AI content.
Budget consequence
Compare tools at their watermark-free price, not their advertised one. And never pay third parties to strip visible watermarks from free-tier output — it typically violates terms, risks the account, and the legitimate clean tier usually costs less than the workaround. The clean entry points per model are in the price sheet and free-tier ranking.
